Archery Bow Cases: Protect Bows from Abrasions and Other Damage

General Characteristics of Bow Cases

The popularity of archery as a game means that archery competitions are popping up just about anytime. Some of these events may be scheduled so close to each other that an archer may find himself packing up for a new tournament just as he has concluded the last one. In this case, mobility is very important and portability is greatly desired. This is why equipments that allow quick movements are important to the archer. These equipments include archery bow cases.

Materials Used in Archery Bow Cases

Bow cases are very important in archery competitions as it allows one to travel while carrying extra arrows with him. Moreover, bow cases have an important role to play: as a container for extra arrows. They must ensure that the arrows are well-protected from the elements, thus keeping the razor-sharp tip of the arrow from going blunt. The following are some of the materials commonly used in archery bow cases:

1. Wood. The most common material used in archery bow cases is wood. The most common wood used for such purpose is yew, but because of the high cost involved in making yew as casing, the material is not that frequently used anymore. In turn, it has become more of a collector's item because of the high value associated to it. Aside from yew, another common material used is oak. Since oak is easier to obtain than yew and equally durable and reliable, oak is thought to be as fit as yew for archery bow cases. Because wood is sturdy, it can prevent the bow from being damaged whenever the container is accidentally pressed against hard surfaces, protecting the bow from abrasions. However, one disadvantage of using wood in archery bow cases is that it cannot be made to shrink. Hence, it occupies quite a space.

2. Leather. The next most commonly used material in archery bow casing is leather. Leather has the needed property that is missing in wood. Because it is pliable, it can be made to fit into small spaces. Moreover, it is also durable, so it serves the main purpose for using bow casing: protecting the bow from damages or abrasions. Aside from that, leather bow cases can also resist water so the interior of the container is kept air dry. Another advantage of using leather cases over wood cases is that the leather cases are easy to obtain and not as expensive as wood bow cases.

3. Plastic. Plastic is a rather new element used in archery bow cases. Plastic is durable, and unlike wood cases, it is not as heavy.

4. Canvas. When it comes to archery bow cases, canvas is preferred by most because it has the durability of wood and plastic casings, with the pliability of a leather case. But what sets the edge in favor of canvas as a material for archery bow cases is that it is not as expensive as the other three. Moreover, even in other casings, canvas is also used to line the internal of the case for an added protection to the bow.
