Archery Equipment: Play Great Archery with the Proper Equipment
Archery is a very popular sport, mainly because there isn't a lot of equipment required in this sport and
because it imitates hunting expeditions that hunters of old experienced. It allows one to experience the thrill of
seeking a target and hitting it at the right places.
The Different Archery Equipments
The following are the most common archery equipment.
1. Bows. There are five commonly used bows in archery.
Longbow. The longbow is an archery equipment used primarily when the target is
at a very long distance from the archer. It is commonly used in sporting competitions. It has nearly the
same height as the archer and sometimes even longer. The longbow is also very heavy, but this weight has an
additional advantage as it provides the archer with a better aim at the target as if the arrow is locked to
it even when the archer pulls the arrow.
The short bow is the opposite of the longbow. Again, as the name implies, it is short and
light in weight. As such, it is not suitable for use in sporting competitions, but in hunting trips only. This is because in hunting, the density of the forest does
not afford one to shoot over long distances.
The crossbow resembles the old Greek weapon, the ballista. A piece of wood is strung in the middle of
the string that serves as a launch platform for the arrow. A crossbow is operated in a manner similar to a
gun.
A recurve
bow meanwhile has its tips bent away from the archer whenever it is unstrung. The main advantage of
a recurve bow is that it provides more energy and speed to the arrow compared with other bow types. As such,
even short arrows can be used if the environment does not permit the use of long arrows such as in the
jungle.
The flat bow has wide limbs that are approximately rectangular in its cross-section.
The compound bow is a rather more modern design in that its ends
utilize levers and pulleys to operate the string.
2. Arrows. The arrow is the archery equipment that complements the bow. It is the bullet with which you use to
hit the target. There are several kinds of arrows used in archery, each for a definite purpose. Most archery arrows
are made from aluminum alloys, although carbon alloys are increasingly becoming popular because they are sturdy and
lightweight. Arrows in archery are equipped with
fletching: plastic or bird feathers at
the rear end of the arrow that enable it to maintain balance throughout its flight. Furthermore, the arrowhead
must be designed in such a way that the arrow will not be erratic in its flight and be immune from the wind and
other factors that may influence its performance.
3. The target. This is the archery equipment that will tell you if you are
improving or needs to improve your game further. The target commonly uses rings with corresponding points for a
particular area. The target may be purchased at your local store, although you can improvise one for yourself.
The most commonly used material for a target is carton and canvass, although cotton materials are also used. In
making a target, be sure that it is sturdy enough to withstand the arrow's impact.
In playing the game, it is imperative that you have the proper archery equipment to help develop your game.
